ITF inspector can:

  • Inspect ships for violations of employment contracts, flag state legislation, or international standards
  • Communicate with crew members on board and ashore, record, process, and resolve seafarers' claims
  • Ask the shipowner questions about the situation on board and put pressure on them to resolve the issues
  • Provide consultation and assistance to seafarers (including during strikes), give recommendations on legal options for resolving specific problems in the port or country
  • The Inspector may establish contact with the ITF union, third-party organizations, clergy, and recommend a lawyer for legal action
  • Promote the conclusion of ITF standard Collective Bargaining Agreements on ships
  • Cooperate with other ITF inspectors, trade unions, and stakeholders in other countries
  • Maintain contact with flag state authorities, embassies, and seafarers' welfare agencies when resolving labour disputes

ITF inspector cannot:

  • Violate national laws or engage in any illegal actions
  • Change or violate the ITF's policies or its affiliated unions
  • Act against the union's interests where he/she works
  • Always have access to a vessel or terminal
  • Resolve issues without crew cooperation
  • Guarantee that seafarers will not lose their jobs
  • Employ a seafarer
  • Perform miracles
